Chief of the Fathers Giving More - Nehemiah 7:71

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah counted the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem to the completion of the barrier wall, and he added, some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basins, five hundred and thirty priests' garments”, and in chapter seven and verse seventy-one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared how, “some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the treasure of the work” where we read,

And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver.

The verse reads, And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, ...”Nehemiah began with the words, “and some of the chief of the fathers which means “and a number of the top, summit and highest male progenitors and ancestors” “gave to the treasure of the work” or “granted, entrusted, delivered up and bestowed to the storehouse, magazine or supplies” “twenty thousand drams of gold” which means “twenty thousand drachma or units of gold metal”. Nehemiah shared how another small number of the top male progenitors contributed “twenty thousand drachma of gold metal” to the storehouse of supplies from which the workmanship was being done.

The verse goes on to say, “... and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “and two thousand and two hundred pound” or “and twenty two hundred maneh, mina or about sixty shekels” “of silver” which means “of silver metal”. Nehemiah shared how the highest male ancestors also contributed “twenty two hundred” mina of silver metal.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah that the great male progenitors belonging to Israel were givers to the workmanship. They gave gold and silver to the storehouse, and these funds would be used to continue the service in God's Kingdom and city. God owns everything, (See Psalm 24:1) and He wants us to be a part of His Kingdom work. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins and raised Him from the dead three days later so when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion and ability to contribute to His Kingdom work in the world.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “that which the rest of the people gave”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
