The Children of Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth and Amon - Nehemiah 7:59

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city.” Nehemiah included the children of many of the people of Israel in his census, and he added several of the men such as “the men of the other Nebo, the other Elam” and “the children of Harim, Jericho, Lod, Hadid, Ono and Senaah.” He also counted, “the priests, the Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and the children of Hodevah seventy and four” and he included “the singers, the porters, Nethinims” and “the children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Perida, the children of Barkos, Sisera, Tamah, Neziah, Jaala, Darkon and Giddel”, and in chapter seven and verse fifty-nine of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Shephatiah, Hattil, Pochereth and Amon”, where we read,

The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil,

the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.

The verse reads, The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the childrenwhich means “the offspring and progeny” “of Shephatiah” or “belonging to Shephatiah whose name means Jehovah has judged”, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Hattil” or “belonging to Hattil whose name means doubtful”. Nehemiah shared how the offspring of “Shephatiah and Hattil” were among the servants of Solomon who returned to Jerusalem to the finishing of the barrier wall.

The verse goes on to say, “... the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “the children” or “the progeny or offspring” “of Pochereth of Zabiam” which means “belonging to Pochereth of Zebaim whose name means here the cutting off” “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of Amon” which means “belonging to Amon whose name means skilled or master workman”. Nehemiah added the progeny of “Pochereth of Zebaim” as well as “Amon” to the list of the servants of Solomon who returned to Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover more of the descendants of “Solomon's servants”who went back to Jerusalem to the completion of the barrier wall. God was at work assembling as many as who would to their homeland, and God is much about that business today. He wants everyone to live in Heaven with Him, and when we receive His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world and resurrected from the grave three days later as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and count us among the masses who received and obeyed His directive to “come unto me”. (See Matthew 11:28; John 7:27; Revelation 21:6)

Next time Nehemiah shares the number of, “All the Nethinims”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
