In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city.” Nehemiah included the children of many of the people of Israel in his census, and he added several of the men such as “the men of the other Nebo, the other Elam” and “the children of Harim, Jericho, Lod, Hadid, Ono and Senaah.” He also counted, “the priests, the Levites, the singers, the porters, Nethinims” and “the children of Solomon's servants, these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not show their father's house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel;” He added, “the children of Delaiah, Tobiah, Nekoda and the children of the priests” who “sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy” and he shared what, “the Tirshatha said unto them”, and in chapter seven and verse sixty-six of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared the number of, “the whole congregation” where we read,
The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,
The verse reads, “The whole congregation together ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the whole congregation” which means “everyone within the assembly, convocation and multitude” “together” or “as one”. Nehemiah began to account for the total number of the people within the assembly of Israel which is revealed next.
The verse continues, “... was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, ...” Nehemiah added the words, “was forty and two thousand” or “forty-two thousand people plus” “three hundred” which means “three hundred more plus” “and threescore” or “and sixty more”. Nehemiah said there were forty-two thousand, three hundred and sixty people accounted for within His census.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that the number of the entire assembly of Israel was “forty-two thousand, three hundred and sixty” people. God brought together His chosen ones back into their homeland and into the city of Jerusalem. Although there were more Jewish people who could have returned, these are the ones who obeyed His directive. God invites everyone to receive His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world and raised from the dead after three days. When we accept Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and accounted for in Heaven with Him for all eternity. (See Matthew 7:13)
Next time Nehemiah adds, “beside their manservants and their maidservants”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
