Their Camels and Donkeys - Nehemiah 7:69

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city.” Nehemiah included the children of many of the people of Israel in his census, and he added several of the men such as “the men of the other Nebo, the other Elam” and “the children of Harim, Jericho, Lod, Hadid, Ono and Senaah.” He also made record of, “the priests, the Levites, the singers, the porters, Nethinims” and “the children of Solomon's servants, these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not show their father's house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel;” He added, “the children of Delaiah, Tobiah, Nekoda and of the priests” and those who “sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy” as well as what “the Tirshatha said unto them” as “the whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, beside their manservants and their maidservants, singing men and women, horses and mules”, and in chapter seven and verse sixty-nine of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “their camels and donkeys” where we read,

Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.

The verse reads, Their camels, four hundred thirty and five:” Nehemiah began with the words, “their camels which means “the people of Israel's camels in the sense of labor or burden-bearing”, “four hundred thirty and five” or “four hundred and thirty-five camels”. Nehemiah said there were “four hundred and thirty-five camels” that accompanied the people of Israel when they returned to Jerusalem and Judah from Babylon.

The verse goes on to say, six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “six thousand seven hundred and twenty” or “sixty seven hundred and twenty” “asses” which means “male donkeys”. Nehemiah said there were “sixty seven hundred and twenty” male donkeys that went back to Jerusalem and Judah with the people of Israel.

When we consider Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how there were also “camels and donkeys” that accompanied the people of Israel when they returned to Jerusalem and Judah from being captives in Babylon. God's desire is to have a full commitment from us, and since all things belong to Him, when we surrender to His Son Jesus who died on the cross and was resurrected from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to bring everything we have into an eternal fellowship with Him.

Next time Nehemiah shares how, “some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
