Psalms chapter thirty eight begins with the heading, “[[A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.]]” which breaks down, “A Psalm” or “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” which means “belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel”, “to bring to remembrance” or “to be recalled, call to mind and recorded”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse one of Psalms David said, “O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath” where we read,
O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath: neither chasten me in your hot displeasure.
The verse begins, “O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath:” David began with the words, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “rebuke me not” which means “do not reprove, correct, decide against or judge me, David” “in your wrath” or “in your, Jehovah God's, anger, rage or strife”. David appealed to Jehovah God not to judge Him in anger and rage.
The verse goes on to say, “neither chasten me in your hot displeasure.” David continued with the words, “neither chasten me” or “no and not in any way admonish, instruct, teach and discipline me, David” “in your hot displeasure” which means “by the use of your, Jehovah God's, heat, rage, indignation, anger or venom”. David appealed to Jehovah God not to admonish or instruct him in a heated rage of anger and indignation.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David responded to what appears to be a spiritual and physical attack upon his life. David knew he did something that deserved attention from Jehovah God, and his desires was that he not be punished or admonished in an angry and rage-filled manner. God loves us, so He provide discipline in our lives. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive us, grant us everlasting life and guide and instruct us by His Holy Spirit to live in a righteous manner. At times, we will fail, and He will instruct and teach us His ways. May we pray like David that He does so in a way that is not angry and defeating.
Next time David says, “your arrows stick fast in me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
