Lovers and Friends Standing Aloof - Psalms 38:11

In Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “Lord, all my desire is before you; and my groaning is not hid from you. My heart pants, my strength fails me: as for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse eleven of Psalms David said, “my lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore” where we read,

My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

The verse begins, My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; David began with the words, “My lovers” or “my, David's, people with who he had great affection” “and my friends” which means “and my, David's, companions, persons and intimate fellow citizens” “stand aloof from my sore” or “remain, endure, cease, continue and abide in view of, before and in the presence of my, David's, stroke, plague, disease and wound”. David said the people who were closest to him as well as his companions continued to remain in site of his plague and disease.

The verse goes on to say,and my kinsmen stand afar off. David continued with the words, “and my kinsmen” or “and my, David's, personal kinship, neighbors and allies” “stand afar off” which means “remain, endure, cease, continue and abide remotely, far away, distant and abroad”. David said his neighbors, kinsfolk and allies stayed distant from him as well.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we realize everyone to whom David previously related abandoned him. His closest loves, his closest friends and his relatives kept themselves apart from him. David was considered damaged and unworthy of closeness. The effects of sin often makes others stay away from us, however, God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins so that we may be intimate and close to Him. He does not “stand aloof from” us, but rather draws near to those who draw near to Him. (See James 4:8) Let us receive the LORD Jesus into our lives and allow Him to forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide healing for our afflictions and the repercussions for our disobedience to Him.

Next time David says, they also that seek after my life lay snares for me, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
