Psalms chapter thirty eight David said, “O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath: neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me sore. There is no soundness in my flesh because of your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin”, and in chapter thirty eight and verse four of Psalms David said, “my iniquities are gone over my head” where we read,
For my iniquities are gone over my head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
The verse begins, “For my iniquities are gone over my head:” David began with the words, “for my iniquities” or “because, since and on account that my, David's, perversity, depravity, guilt and consequences for fault” “are gone over my head” which means “are passed over, carried away and traversed above my, David's, summit, upper part and chief front and height”. David said his “sins, errors and wrongs” were traversing the crown of his head.
The verse continues, “as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.” David added the words, “as an heavy burden” or “in likeness to a great, abundant, massive and difficult load, bearing and carrying” “they are too heavy for me” which means “they, the heavy burdens, exist as burdensome, insensible and grievously afflicting for me, David”. David said the weight of his “sins” was too great for him to bear.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how burdensome David's sins were upon him. He considered them too difficult to carry, and because they were so weighty, they oppressed him. Sinful activity has it's price, and when we “sin” against God, we experience consequences for our behavior. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the penalty of death for our sins. When we submit to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (See 1 John 1:9). Though our “iniquities” are heavy, and the weight of them is strong, Jesus is able to remove them and put within us peace and tranquility that He willingly provides.
Next time David says, “my wounds stink and are corrupt”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
