Let Me Not Be Ashamed - Psalms 31:17

In Psalms chapter thirty one David said, “My times are in your hand: deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from them that persecute me. Make your face to shine upon your servant: save me for your mercies' sake”, and in chapter thirty one and verse seventeen of Psalms David said to Jehovah, “Let me not be ashamed, O LORD”, where we read,

Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon you:

let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

The verse begins, Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon you:” David began with the words, “Let me not be ashamed” which means “allow and permit me, David, in no way or manner to be disconcerted, disappointed and confounded”, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”; “for I have called upon you” which means “because, since and on account that I, David, cried out, shouted aloud and proclaimed to you, Jehovah God”. David cried aloud to Jehovah God not to permit him to be disappointed or confounded.

The verse continues, let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave. David added the words, “let the wicked” or “allow and permit the criminal, guilty of sin, bad and morally wrong” “be ashamed” which means “exist as disconcerted, disappointed and confounded”, “and let them be silent” or “ and allow and permit them to be struck dumb, destroyed and dead” “in the grave” which means “within sheol, the underworld, hell and the pit”. David appealed to Jehovah God to cause the evil people to be disconcerted, confounded, still, quiet and dead within the underworld or hell.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David was concerned about being disconcerted, disappointed and confounded, and he knew to call upon Jehovah God to help him. Rather than avenge himself against people who were evil and morally wrong, he called upon Jehovah to make them disappointed and dead in the underworld. God was David's provision, safety and protection, and he knew God would care for him even when evil people encircled him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of mankind, and anyone who yields to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. We are all invited to receive Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, and when we do, Jehovah God will protect us from anyone who disappoints and confounds.

Next time David says to Jehovah God, Let the lying lips be put to silence, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
