Given Up Unto Their Own Hearts' Lust - Psalms 81:12

In Psalms chapter eighty one Asaph shared how Jehovah God said, “I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt: open your mouth wide, and I will fill it. But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me”, and in chapter eighty one and verse twelve of Psalms Asaph shared how Jehovah God said, “I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust”, where we read,

So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.

The verse begins, So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust:” Asaph began with the words, “So I gave them up” or “therefore I, Jehovah God, released the people of Israel” “unto their own hearts' lust” which means “toward their, the people of Israel's, stubbornness, hardness, firmness, obstinacy and imagination of their personal inner man, mind, will, understanding, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination, resolution , determination and conscience”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God released the people of Israel to the desires of their own minds and wills.

The verse continues, and they walked in their own counsels. Asaph added the words, “and they walked” or “and they, the people of Israel, ambled about and made their way” “in their own counsels” which means “within their, the people of Israel's, own personal plan, purpose and device”. Asaph shared how the people of Israel made their way by following their own plans and purpose.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see through Asaph how Jehovah God delivered the people of Israel over to their own passions and desires, and they proceeded in their lives according to their own advice, purposes and plans. In other words, God allowed the people of Israel to reap the results of their own ways. God loves people, and He knows what is best for us. He knew we were separated from a personal relationship with Him because we have sin in our lives, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When He died and rose again after the third day, Jesus made it possible to be in a relationship with God and to be guided by His counsel. When we believe and trust in Him, our sins are forgiven, we are promised eternal life, and we are given the Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth. (See John 16:13) God's “counsel” is best, and we are wise to hear and obey Him and His direction for our lives rather than our own.

Next time Asaph shares how Jehovah God says, “Oh that my people had hearkened unto me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
