In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad, Adoniakam, Bigvai, Adin, Ater of Hezekiah, Hashum, Bezai, Hariph and Gibeon” and “the men of Bethlehem, Netophah and Anathoth”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the men of Bethzamaveth”, where we read,
The men of Bethzamaveth, forty and two.
The verse reads, “The men of Bethzamaveth, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the men” or “the male human beings” “of Bethzamaveth” which means “belonging to Bethzamaveth whose name means house of the strength of death”. Nehemiah shared how the male human beings from the family of “Bethzamaveth” were among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem and Judah and remained to the completing of the barrier wall.
The verse goes on to say, “... forty and two” Nehemiah continued with the words, “forty and two” or “forty two men”. Nehemiah said there were “forty two” male human beings who belonged to the family of “Bethzamaveth”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how there were forty two male adults who were part of the family of “Bethzamaveth” who went back to the city of Jerusalem and continued there to the completion of the barrier wall which surrounded it. Each of these groups were identified and counted by Nehemiah because God instructed him to do so. God wants us to be a part of His “count” for those who will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. When we submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of everyone and was resurrected from the grave three days later, He will grant us access into His Kingdom and allow us to be “counted” with Him for all eternity.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the men of Kirjathjearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
