In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad, Adoniakam, Bigvai, Adin, Ater of Hezekiah, Hashum, Bezai, Hariph and Gibeon” and “the men of Bethlehem, Netophah, Anathoth, Bethzamaveth, Kirjathjearim, Chephirah, Beeroth, Ramah and Geba”, and in chapter seven and verse thirty-one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the men of Michmas”, where we read,
The men of Michmas, an hundred and twenty and two.
The verse reads, “The men of Michmas, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the men” or “the male adults” “ofMichmas” which means “belonging to Michmas or Michmash whose name means hidden and was a city in Benjamin lying near Ramah and approximately ten miles (16 km) north of Jerusalem; probably modern 'Mukhmas'”. Nehemiah shared how the male adults belonging to “Michmas” were among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem to the finishing of the barrier wall.
The verse goes on to say, “... an hundred twenty and two.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “an hundred” or “one hundred men plus” “twenty and two” which means “twenty two more”. Nehemiah said there were “one hundred and twenty-two” men belonging to “Mischmas” who were part of his census.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how “one hundred and twenty-two” male adults from “Michamas” were among the people of Israel who went back to Jerusalem and continued to the completing of the barrier wall. These “men” were not only important to Nehemiah to count, but God also knew every one of them. God knows us as well, and He loves us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and He raised Him from the dead three days later so all who put their faith and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” may be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and have their names written in the “lambs book of life” so they will live in Heaven with God forever. (See Revelation 3:5) Let all who read these words submit to Jesus and receive His eternal salvation.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the men of Bethel and Ai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
