In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “hearken unto your father that begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “buy the truth, and sell it not” where we read,
Buy the truth, and sell it not;
also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
The verse begins, “Buy the truth, and sell it not;” Solomon began with the words, “buy the truth” or “get, acquire, obtain and possess that which is truthful, firm, faithful, sure and reliable”, “and sell it not” which means “and do not barter away the truth”. Solomon told his son to obtain and purchase that which is truthful and not to exchange it away.
The verse goes on to say, “also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” Solomon continued with the words, “also wisdom” or “even so and indeed skill, prudence and shrewdness”, “and instruction” which means “and discipline, chastening and correction”, “and understanding” or “and discernment, knowledge and wisdom”. Solomon said his son was indeed to purchase skill, prudence, discipline and discernment as well.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon wanted his son to gain qualities in his life that would keep in in alignment with God's principles. God wants us to have the “truth, wisdom, instruction and understanding” along with a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us these qualities through His Holy Spirit so we may live in a manner that is pleasing to Him.
Next time Solomon says, “the father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
