Life Eternal Knowing God and Jesus - John 17:3

The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify your Son, that your Son also may glorify you. As you have given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him, and in chapter seventeen and verse three of his book John shared how Jesus told His Father God, “this is life eternal, that they might know you … and Jesus Christ” where we read:

And this is life eternal, that they might know you, the only true God,

and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

The verse reads, “And this is life eternal, that they might know you, the only true God, ... John began with Jesus' words, “And this is life eternal” which means “the following exists as the absolute fullness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God and is real and genuine, active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to always be, never ceases and lasts for ever”, “that they might know you” or “in order or so that people whether male or female may learn, perceive and understand you, God the Heavenly Father”, “the only true God” which refers to “the sole and single real, truthful, veracious and sincere Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. John shared how Jesus declared that “true never ending life” consists of people “perceiving and knowing” the one and only “true God”.

The verse goes on to say, ... and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John continued with Jesus' words, “and Jesus Christ” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the anointed One and Messiah”, “whom you have sent” which means “that you, Heavenly Father God, have dispatched, assigned and appointed”. John shared how Jesus included Himself as the One who was “sent” by God whom people are to “know” as well.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn what “life eternal” really means. Knowing “God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ” is “age abiding life”, and anyone who puts their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will not only be forgiven of their sins, but also be granted everlasting life with God. God desires intimacy with every person, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus, He begins to reveal Himself to them in ways they never could imagine. He opens their minds and hearts to His Word, the Bible, and shares with them about Himself, Jesus and His ways, and all are invited to surrender their lives to Him and discover the meaning of “true eternal life”.

Next time John shares how Jesus prays, “I have glorified you on the earth: I have finished the work”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
