The Reproving Holy Spirit - John 16:8

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eight of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when he is come, he will reprove the world” where we read:

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

The verse reads,And when he is come, ... John began with Jesus' words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he is come” or “the Comforter Holy Spirit arises and arrives” the following will occur. John shared how Jesus began to share what would happen when the “Comforter” is dispatched to His disciples.

The verse goes on to say, “... he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” John continued with the words, “he will reprove the world” which means “the Comforter will convict, refute and confute the earth and it's inhabitants” “of sin” or “pertaining to missing the mark, error, mistakes and wrongs”, “and of righteousness” which means “and pertaining to integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness and correctness of thinking, feeling and acting”, “and of judgment” or “and pertaining to opinion or decision given concerning anything”. John shared how the “Comforter” would “convict” the earth and it's inhabitants in their “errors, integrity, virtue, purity and decisions concerning anything”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn the role of the “Comforter Holy Spirit” when He was dispatched by Jesus. The “Comforter” comes alongside people to “convict” them of their “sin, errors and wrong”. He also convinces people concerning areas of “integrity, purity and virtue” as well as “decisions concerning things that are right and wrong”. The “Comforter” was to convince people of their need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and when they submit to Jesus, they will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Those who carefully examine the role of the “Holy Spirit” will yield their lives to Jesus and be guided by Him in their day to day walk with God.

Next time we see John share how Jesus says, “of sin, because they believe not on me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
