In Psalms chapter eighty two Asaph said, “Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked”, and in chapter eighty two and verse five of Psalms Asaph said, “They know not, neither will they understand”, where we read,
They know not, neither will they understand;
they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
The verse begins, “They know not, neither will they understand;” Asaph began with the words, “They know not” or “they, the oppressors or wicked people do not perceive, discriminate or distinguish”, “neither will they understand” which means “nor an not in any way shall they, the oppressors or wicked people regard, consider or discern”. Asaph said the people who are evil and hostile to Jehovah God do not perceive, discriminate or discern His ways.
The verse goes on to say, “they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.” Asaph continued with the words, “they walk on in darkness” or “the oppressors or wicked people amble about, proceed, traverse and make their way in misery and lack of understanding”: “all the foundations” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the footings, under-structures or substratum” “of the earth” or “belonging to the world” “are out of course” which means “exist as tottering, shaking, slipping and dislodging”. Asaph shared how the people who are wicked and do not walk in the ways of Jehovah God proceed in misery and lack of understanding even while the world totters and shakes.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph knew the mental and spiritual condition of the people who refused to hear and obey Jehovah God. They did not perceive, consider nor discern His ways, and they continued in their ways of misery even while the world was shaking. In other words, the people who were hostile to God stayed in their state of misery even though their world was crashing around them. God gives an invitation to every person to receive His Son Jesus into their lives because Jesus died for their sins. When we receive Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and attend to those who without “understanding” oppress the poor and make their way in the dark.
Next time Asaph says, “I have said, You are gods”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
