The Children of the Other Elam - Nehemiah 7:34

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city. Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this”, and he included “the children of Parosh, Shephatiah, Pahathmoab, Jeshua, Joab, Elam, Zattu, Zaccai, Binnui, Bebai, Azgad, Adoniakam, Bigvai, Adin, Ater of Hezekiah, Hashum, Bezai, Hariph and Gibeon” and “the men of Bethlehem, Netophah, Anathoth, Bethzamaveth, Kirjathjearim, Chephirah, Beeroth, Ramah, Geba, Michmas, Bethel, Ai and the other Nebo”and in chapter seven and verse thirty-four of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of the other Elam”, where we read,

The children of the other Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four.

The verse reads, The children of the other Elam, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of the other Elam which means “belonging to one other person named Nebo whose name means eternity”. Nehemiah shared how there were offspring belonging to another man named “Elam” who were among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem and Judah and remained to the completion of the barrier wall.

The verse continues, “... a thousand two hundred fifty and four.” Nehemiah added the words, “a thousand two hundred” or “twelve hundred offspring plus” “fifty and four” which means “fifty-four others”. Nehemiah shared how there were twelve hundred and fifty-four offspring of another man named “Elam” whom he counted.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah another group, twelve hundred and fifty-four of them, of offspring from another man named “Elam” who returned to Jerusalem and Judah and were accounted for by him. God's idea of making a count of the people who were in Jerusalem and Judah from the captivity in Babylon to the rebuilding of the barrier wall was coming together. God loves all people, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised him from the dead three days later, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins and granted everlasting life with Him. As we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us eternal life and bring us into His family of believers who shall be counted with Him forever.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Harim”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
