The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that you enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “being in an agony he prayed more earnestly” where we read:
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly:
and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
The verse reads, “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly:” Luke began with the words, “and being in an agony” or “and becoming wrought in struggle or wrestling with severe mental emotions and anguish” “he prayed more earnestly” which means “Jesus supplicated, made orations and worshiped with greater intensity and assiduousness”. Luke shared how Jesus was in “severe struggle and anguish” as He “made orations” with “greater intensity”.
The verse goes on to say, “and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke continues with the words, “and his sweat” or “and Jesus' perspiration” “was a it were great drops of blood” which means “was like large, thick droplets of clotted blood that were” “falling down to the ground” or “descending to the earth, terra firma or land below Him”. Luke shared how Jesus was in so much “anguish” that His “sweat” became as “great drops of blood” that were “falling” to the “earth” beneath Him.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we can only imagine how “great” the sorrow and “anguish” was that Jesus suffered. When a person suffers sweating of blood it is called hematohidrosis; It is possible to occur in individuals suffering from extreme levels of stress when the sweat glands, that have multiple blood vessels in a net-like form, are constricted under the pressure of great stress.” Jesus was to be “judged” for the sins of the whole world, and He would suffer and die on behalf of all mankind. Jesus was sent by God the Father to give access to Heaven for everyone who believes and trust in Him, and when a person carefully examines what Jesus did for them, they should submit themselves to Him as their personal “Lord and Savior”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
