Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how Simon said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death” where we read:
And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death.
The verse reads, “And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with you, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto him” or “and Simon Peter uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “I am ready to go with you” or “I, Peter, am prepared to transfer, journey and depart alongside you, Jesus”. Luke shared how Peter vowed to the “Lord Jesus” that he would “journey” alongside Him into the following places.
The verse continues, “... both into prison, and to death.” Luke added the words, “both into prison” or “even so and indeed into the place where captives are kept and incarceration”, “and to death” which means “and to the loss of life as in dying”. Luke shared how Peter said he would “go alongside” Jesus into incarceration and would die with Him if necessary.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we can sense the bravado of Peter as he claimed to be willing to go to “jail” for Him as well as “die” if it was with Jesus. Jesus will respond to Peter in our next verse, but for now let it suffice for us to understand there are many people who believe they are able to do something like Peter until it comes time to actually act. God, however, does as He promised, and He sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of the whole world. Everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God. These are accomplished by Jesus' work and not their own, and all who understand this principle will realize their “salvation” and “abilities” come from Jesus who should be praised for His marvelous work.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells Simon Peter, “the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall three times deny that you know me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
