The Cock Shall Not Crow Before You Deny - Luke 22:34

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus told Simon Peter, “the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall three times deny that you know me” where we read:

And he said, I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall three times deny that you know me.

The verse reads,And he said, I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I tell you” which means “I, Jesus, speak, affirm, maintain, exhort, advise and direct to you, Peter”, “Peter” or “one of Jesus' disciples whose name means little rock or stone”, “the cock shall not crow this day” which means “the male chicken known as a rooster will not emit a sound or cry aloud on the particular day in which Jesus was speaking” before the following would occur. Luke shared how Jesus responded to Jesus by telling him the “rooster” would not “crow” on that “day” before the following event happened.

The verse goes on to say, “... before that you shall three times deny that you know me.” Luke continued with the words, “before that you shall three times deny” or “prior to or sooner than that you, Peter, will affirm that you have not acquaintance or connection with Jesus three times” “that you know me” which means “that you, Peter, know anything concerning Jesus Himself”. Luke shared how Jesus said Peter would tell others three different times that he knew nothing about Jesus prior to the “rooster crowing”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus responded to Peter's statement concerning going to prison with Him and even dying if necessary. Jesus knew Peter would “deny” Him three times before the rooster would crow, and Jesus loved Peter anyway. Jesus is well aware of those who believe they are able do much more than they really are, and God sent Jesus into the world because He knew people could in no way save themselves. Those who are wise will yield to Jesus who alone can save and receive everyone who will believe and trust in Him rather than themselves like Peter.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
