Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus tells Simon, “but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not” where we read:
But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren.
The verse reads, “But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not:” Luke began with the words, “but I have prayed for you” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, Jesus, have made supplications, asked for and made petitions on your behalf Simon”, “that your faith” which means “so your, Simon's, assurance, belief and fidelity” “fail not” or “does not cease, stop or quit”. Luke shared how Jesus said He “prayed” on “Simon's behalf” so that His “belief and assurance” does not “cease or stop”.
The verse goes on to say, “and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren.” Luke continued with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “you are converted” which means “you, Simon Peter, are turned about, returned and brought back”, “strengthen your brethren” or “steadfastly set and establish your, Simon's, fellow believers who are united to another by the bond of affection”. Luke shared how Jesus told “Simon” after he “returned and was brought back”, he was to “establish” his fellow believers.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus said He “interceded” for “Simon” who was “Peter”, and the result would be the “faith” of “Simon” would not cease. Though “Simon Peter” would eventually “deny” Jesus, his “faith” would not stop. Jesus is for people and not against them, and He came to die for their sins so they may live with Him forever. Those who believe and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God.
Next time Luke shares how Simon says, “Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
