Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said to His disciples, “You are they which have continued with me in my temptations. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father has appointed unto me;”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to His disciples, “that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging” where we read:
That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
The verse reads, “That you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, ...” Luke began with the words, “that you may eat” or “so you, disciples of Jesus, might consume and devour” “and drink” which means “and imbibe” “at my table” or “at Jesus' eating place where food is placed” “in my kingdom” which means “in Jesus' royal power, kingship, dominion and rule”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples would be able to “eat and drink” at His “table” within His “dominion, royal power and rule”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Luke continued with the words, “and sit on thrones” or “and be seated upon chairs of state which have a footstool” “judging the twelve tribes” which means “separating, putting asunder, picking out, selecting, choosing approving, esteeming and preferring the twelve clans, people and kindreds” “of Israel” or “belonging to Israel which means he shall be a prince of God or governed by God and was the family or descendants of the nation of Israel”. Luke shared how Jesus said His “twelve” disciples would be seated upon “chairs of state” where they would be “approving and esteeming” the “twelve” clans “of Israel”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the authority Jesus was to grant to His “disciples”. Even the “twelve tribes of Israel” were to be under their “judgment”, and they would make decisions concerning them there. God desires to “exalt” everyone who humbles themselves before His Son Jesus and receives Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. His invitation is open to everyone, and those who yield their lives to Him shall find He is willing not only to help them in this life, but also in the life to come. Let all who read these words carefully consider the promise of Jesus and submit their lives to Him today.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
