A Whore is a Deep Ditch - Proverbs 23:27

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “a whore is a deep ditch” where we read,

For a whore is a deep ditch;

and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

The verse begins, “For a whore is a deep ditch;” Solomon began with the words, “for a whore” or “because, since and on account that a harlot or prostitute who commits fornication” “is a deep ditch” which means “exists as a mysterious and unsearchable chasms or pit at exceeding depths”. Solomon shared how a woman who is a prostitute exists as a unsearchable chasm or pit with exceeding depths. 

The verse goes on to say, “and a strange woman is a narrow pit.” Solomon continued with the words, “and a strange woman” or “and a foreign, unknown, wayward, unfamiliar and promiscuous female human being” “is a narrow pit” which means “exists as a tight, strait and small well or spring”. Solomon said a female human being who is promiscuous exists as a tight and small well. 

When we think through the words in this verse, we are warned through Solomon concerning seductive women who lead people into dangerous traps. There are people in the world who purpose to allure others into pernicious snares, and because Solomon loved his son, He exposed the women who would lead him into ruin. God desires the same for us. He gave His Son Jesus to the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us by His Holy Spirit to avoid those who would lead us into “deep ditches” and “narrow pits”.
