In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “she also lies in wait for a prey” where we read,
She also lies in wait as for a prey,
and increases transgressors among men.
The verse begins, “She also lies in wait as for a prey, ...” Solomon began with the words, “she also lies in wait” or “she, the whore and strange woman, even so and indeed lurks in ambush” “as for a prey” which means “similar and in likeness to the waiting of a robber or thief”. Solomon shared how the woman who is a prostitute lurks in ambush similar to the way of a thief or robber.
The verse continues, “... and increases transgressors among men.” Solomon added the words, “and increases transgressors” or “and adds and multiplies people who act treacherously, deceitfully, faithlessly and offensively” “among men” which means “in the middle and midst of people”. Solomon said the woman who is a prostitute also multiplies the number of people who act treacherously and deceitfully.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we discover the purpose and desires of the “strange woman” who acts as a harlot. Not only does she lurk to ambush her victims, but her desire is to add to the number of people who act offensively and deceitfully. Solomon wanted to keep his son from her pernicious invitation and ways, and God desires to protect us from such harms as well. He loves us, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to empower us to resist any temptations that others bring into our path so we will be protected and pleasing to Him.
Next time Solomon asks, “who has woe? Who has sorrow?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
