In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with the rod, he shall not die”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “you shall deliver his soul from hell” where we read,
You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from hell.
The verse begins, “You shall beat him with the rod, ...” Solomon began with the words, “you shall beat him” or “you, Solomon's readers and listeners, will strike, smite, chastise or punish the child” “with the rod” which means “by the use of the branch, shaft or truncheon”, the following will occur. Solomon shared how his readers and listeners should correct their children with a shaft or truncheon so the next part of this verse will occur.
The verse continues, “... and shall deliver his soul from hell.” Solomon added the words, “and shall deliver” or “and will save and rescue” “his soul” which means “the child's heart, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “from hell” or “separate and apart from sheol, the underworld, the grave and the pit”. Solomon said correction of a child through the means of a shaft will rescue them from the underworld, grave and the pit.
When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon the benefit of correction and discipline for a child. The discipline given to a child will rescue them from the underworld. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us by His Holy Spirit into all truth including the proper way to correct our children so they may avoid the underworld and have their souls saved forever.
Next time Solomon says, “if your heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
