Your Enemies Make a Tumult - Psalms 83:2

In Psalms chapter eighty three Asaph said, “Keep not you silence, O God: hold not you peace, and be not still, O God”, and in chapter eighty three and verse two of Psalms Asaph said, “your enemies make a tumult”, where we read,

For, lo, your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate you have lifted up the head.

The verse begins, For, lo, your enemies make a tumult: Asaph began with the words, “For, lo” or “because, since and on account, consider, look and behold”, “your enemies” which means “your, Jehovah God's, hating foes and adversaries” “make a tumult” or “murmur, growl, roar, cry aloud, mourn, rage and are clamorous”. Asaph shared how the hating foes of Jehovah God were murmuring and growling.

The verse continues, and they that hate you have lifted up the head. Asaph added the words, “and they that hate you” or “and the people who are odious and utterly hateful to you, Jehovah God” “have lifted up the head” which means “have exalted, raised the summit, upper part, chief, front and tip”. Asaph said the people who were hateful to Jehovah God exalted their “heads” over Him.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Asaph reminded Jehovah God that His hating foes and adversaries were murmuring and growling, and they were raising their “heads” in pride above Him. When we think this through, the futility of their efforts and thoughts are empty and vain. God is omniscient and omnipotent, and He desires to have a relationship with every person. When he sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of mankind, He provided an opportunity for all who believe and trust in Him to be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Though “enemies” growl and raise their “heads” in pride, Jehovah God rules and reigns and provides salvation to all who trust in His Son Jesus.

Next time Asaph says, “They have taken crafty counsel against your people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
