Luke the beloved physician wrote, “the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goes, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples, “began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing” where we read:
And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
The verse reads, “And they began to inquire among themselves, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they began to inquire” or “and Jesus' disciples commenced and made a beginning of examining, discussing and questioning” “among themselves” which means “among their own selves” the following idea. Luke shared how Jesus' disciples began questioning among themselves after Jesus pronounced a “woe” upon the person who “betrays” Him.
The verse continues, “... which of them it was that should do this thing.” Luke added the words, “which of them” or “what one or who of the disciples” “it was that should do” which means “would perform, exercise, carry on and undertake” “this thing” or “the betrayal of Jesus”. Luke shared how the disciples were wondering who among them would be the one to “betray” Jesus.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we notice how Jesus' warning about the person who would “betray” Him stirred His disciples into a discussion. They wondered who among them would actually perform this act, and we can only imagine the conversations they were having. Jesus knew in advance who the person would be, Judas, but He allowed His disciples to discuss it. God had a plan to “save” people from their sins so they may live forever with Him, and only those who believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will gain entrance into Heaven. Those who refuse and reject Jesus will have “betrayed” Him like Judas, and “woe” be to anyone, disciple of Jesus or not, who follows that path.
Next time Luke shares concerning the disciples, “there was also a strife among them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
