A Heart Not Envying Sinners - Proverbs 23:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, if your heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things, and in chapter twenty-three and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “let not your heart envy sinners” where we read,

Let not your heart envy sinners:

but be you in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

The verse begins, “Let not your heart envy sinners: Solomon began with the words, “let not your heart” or “do not allow or permit your, Solomon's son's, soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “envy sinners” which means “be jealous, envious or zealously angry for people who are criminal, exposed to condemnation and reckoned as offenders”. Solomon instructed his son not to allow his soul, mind and will to be envious and zealously angry toward people who are criminal and reckoned as offenders.

The verse goes on to say, “but be you in the fear of the LORD all the day long.” Solomon continued with the words, “but be you in the fear” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover exist with the reverence, awe and respect” “of the LORD” which means “pertaining to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “all the day long” or “through the whole and totality of the sunset to sunrise”. Solomon told his son to be in reverence and awe of Jehovah God throughout the entire day.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Solomon warned his son against being envious of people who were criminal and lived in an offensive manner. Because God loves us, He gave us His commandments, and when we follow them, our lives are better. God knows we have violated His law, and this is not only an indication that we are in rebellion to God, but also that we have sinned against Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us by His Holy Spirit how to remain in reverence to Him and to avoid people who are offensive to Him all the days of our life.

Next time Solomon says, “for surely there is an end”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
