Luke the beloved physician wrote, “the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goes, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed. And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But you shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that does serve. For whether is greater, he that sits at meat, or he that serves? is not he that sits at meat? but I am among you as he that serves”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “you are they which have continued with me in my temptations” where we read:
You are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
The verse reads, “You are they which have continued with me ...” Luke began with the words, “you are they” or “you, disciples of Jesus, are the people” “which have continued with me” which means “who have remained and stayed permanently alongside Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to how His disciples “remained permanently” with Him in the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... in my temptations.” Luke continued with the words, “in my” or “in my, Jesus'” “temptations” which means “trials, proving and tests of His fidelity, integrity, virtue and constancy”. Luke shared how Jesus said His disciples “remained with” Him during His time of “testing and trials”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus commended His disciples for “remaining with” Him during His “tribulations and trials” on earth. The writer of Hebrews in chapter four and verse fifteen wrote, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”, and everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus comes to realize He performed this for everyone. Jesus' disciples “continued with” Him in His “trials” upon the earth, and those who align with Jesus as His followers will participate in the same in their lives.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to His disciples, “I appoint unto you a kingdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
