Respect Unto the Covenant - Psalms 74:20

In Psalms chapter seventy-four Asaph said of Jehovah God, “deliver not the soul of your turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of your poor for ever”, and in chapter seventy-four and verse twenty of Psalms Asaph said, “have respect unto the covenantwhere we read,

Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.

The verse begins, Have respect unto the covenant:” Asaph began with the words, “Have respect” or “look to, regard, pay attention to and consider” “unto the covenant” which means “toward the alliance, pledge, treaty and league”. Asaph wanted Jehovah God to regard the alliance and pledge.

The verse goes on to say,for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.” Asaph continued with the words, “for the dark places” or “because, since and on account that the secrecy, hiding place and grave” “of the earth are full” which means “belonging to the world exist as accomplished, filled, armed and satisfied” “of the habitations” or “pertaining to the pastures, abodes and meadows” “of cruelty” which means “belonging to violence, wrong and injustice”. Asaph said the secret locations within the world exist as armed with pastures and meadows of violence, wrong and injustice.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph appealed to Jehovah God to pay attention to His covenant of promises because the world was filled with places of evil and wrong. We can sense Asaph's passion as he beckoned Jehovah God to pay attention to His “covenant”. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be well aware of all the places of evil in the world as He contends with the wicked people within them.

Next time Asaph says, let not the oppressed return ashamed, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
