Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where will you that we prepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in. And you shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master says unto you, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse twelve of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples the goodman of the house, “shall show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready” Jesus where we read:
And he shall show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
The verse reads, “And he shall show you a large upper room furnished:” Luke began with the words, “and he shall show you” or “and the goodman or householder will expose to you, Peter and John” “a large upper room” which means “a massive room in the upper or above part of the house” “furnished” or spread with couches or divans“”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “householder” would show “Peter and John” a “massive room” which was located in the “upper” part of his house that was already prepared for dining.
The verse goes on to say, “there make ready.” Luke added the word, “there” or “in that large upper room” “make ready ” which means “make preparations and get ready everything for the passover meal”. Luke shared how Jesus said Peter and John were to “make preparations” for the “passover meal” in the “large upper room” they were to be shown.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn yet another part of the plan for Jesus to eat this last passover meal with His disciples. Peter and John were to be “shown” a room that was located in the “upper” portion of this man's home, and they were to make preparations for “passover” there. God's plan was unfolding step by step, and as Peter and John carried out Jesus' instructions, they were to find everything just as He said. Jesus came to the world to “save” people from their sins so they may live with God throughout all eternity, and His deliberate actions, even in the preparation for this last passover, should demonstrate not only His willingness to “save” people, but also to lead them in their every day lives.
Next time Luke shares how Peter and John, “went, and found as he had said unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
