Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where will you that we prepare?”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse ten of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in” where we read:
And he said unto them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water;” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to Peter and John”, “behold” which means “lo, look and consider”, “when you are entered” or “at the time and moment you, Peter and John are come into and make entrance” “into the city” which means “into the habitation, abode and town”, “there shall a man meet you” or “there will be a male human being who will happen and befall you, Peter and John”, “bearing a pitcher of water” which means “lifting, carrying and holding an earthen vessel, pot or jug containing water”. Luke shared how Jesus told Peter and John they would encounter a “man” who would be “carrying” a “jug of water” as soon as they “entered into the city”.
The verse goes on to say, “follow him into the house where he enters in.” Luke continued with the words, “follow him” or “join as an attendant and accompany the man bearing the pitcher of water” “into the house” which means “in the dwelling place, abode and habitation” “where he enters in” or “in the location or place that the man makes entrance and comes into”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed Peter and John to “accompany” the man bearing the pitcher of water into the “dwelling place” in which he enters.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see the simplistic and yet perceptive directions given by Jesus. Peter and John did not know where to prepare the passover meal, and Jesus gave them directions to “enter the city, discover the man carrying a pitcher of water and follow him to his house”. These one by one directions will serve to fulfill Jesus' desire to eat the passover with His disciples, and whenever God is leading, He gives step by step instructions to those who will obey and follow them. Let it be noted that God loves people, and He knows best for their lives. First, they are to believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and then step by step, as they obey Him, God will lead them to fulfill His desires not only in their own lives but also in the lives of others.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples to ask, “Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
