The beloved physician Luke wrote, “then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse five of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders, “were glad, and covenanted to give him money” where we read:
And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
The verse reads, “And they were glad, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they” or “and the chief priests and scribes” “were glad” which means “rejoiced exceedingly and were cheerful”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” became very happy when Judas came to them to “betray” Jesus.
The verse continues “... and covenanted to give him money.” Luke added the words, “and covenanted” or “and resolved, determined, arranged and engaged” “to give him money” which means “to grant, bestow, furnish and supply silver pieces to Judas”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” agreed to give Judas silver money if he would betray Jesus.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Judas was to be “paid” for delivering Jesus over to the “chief priests and scribes”. Judas was influenced by “Satan”, and his desire was to follow through on “betraying” Jesus over to the “religious leaders”. God knew this was the plan for Judas all along, and because Judas would “betray” Jesus, all the world would have an opportunity to be “saved” from their sins. Those who refuse and reject Jesus continue to “betray” Him to this day, and there will be an accounting for the decision they make concerning Him.
Next time Luke shares how Judas, “promised, and sought opportunity to betray” Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
