Judas Visits the Religious Leaders to Betray Jesus - Luke 22:4

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse four of his book Luke shared how Judas, “went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains” to “betray” Jesus where we read:

And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains,

how he might betray him unto them.

The verse reads,And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he went his way or “and Judas left and departed”, “and communed” which means “and talked and spoke” “with the chief priests” or “with the high priests” “and captains” which refers to “the commanders of the Levites who kept guard in and around the temple”. Luke shared how Judas left Jesus and the other disciples to go and “talk” with the “high priests” and “commanders” within the temple.

The verse goes on to say, “... how he might betray him unto them.” Luke continued with the words, “how he might betray him” or “in what way and manner he, Judas, may deliver Jesus up treacherously and put in custody to be judged, condemned, punished, scourged, tormented and put to death” “unto them” which means “to the “chief priests and scribes”. Luke shared how “Judas” desired to “deliver Jesus over to the religious leaders” to be “condemned, scourged and put to death”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Judas left Jesus and the other disciples so he could learn how to “betray” Him. We are not completely certain about all of Judas' motives in this action, but we do know “Satan” possessed him and he was playing into “Satan's” plan. God's desire is to “save” people from their sins, and for that to happen, Jesus was to be “scourged, beaten and crucified”. Those who consider Judas' actions should consider their own ways toward Jesus and be sure they are not aligning with this way of “betraying” the Christ and Son of God.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders, “were glad, and covenanted to give him money”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
