A Mouth Smoother than Butter - Psalms 55:21

In Psalms chapter fifty five David said, “He has delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me. God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abides of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God. He has put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he has broken his covenant”, and in chapter fifty-five and verse twenty-one of Psalms David said, “the words of his mouth were smoother than butter”, where we read,

The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart:

his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

The verse begins, The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart:” David began with the words, “the words of his mouth” or “the speeches, utterances, declarations and proclamations belonging to the friend of David's orifice in his face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “were smoother than butter” which means “existed as divided, apportioned, assigned and distributed as curd-like, unctuous and hypocritical flattery”, “but war was in his heart” or “however battle and hostile encounter existed inside the betraying friend's inner man, mind, soul, understanding, inclination, resolution, determination, conscience and seat of appetites and passions”. David said the friend who betrayed him used flattering words to speak to him, however, battle and hostile engagement was within his mind and soul.

The verse continues, his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.” David added the words, “his words” or “the speeches, utterances, declarations and proclamations belonging to the friend of David” “were softer than oil” which means “existed as tender, weak of heart, timid, fearful and penitent”, “yet were they drawn swords” or “however the words of the betraying friend existed as open sharp weapons used for battle and war”. David said the friend who betrayed him employed speeches and utterances that seemed tender and timid, however, they were actually like weapons of war to be used against David.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David identified the flattering words that his friend previously used with him. Though his words may have sounded timid, weak and penitent, they were actually like sharp daggers to be used against David. Jesus knew what this was like even as Judas Iscariot betrayed him with a kiss and timid words. (See Matthew 26:49) Jesus was sent by His Father God into the world to be “betrayed” unto death on the cross to pay the price for the sins of everyone. He endured the cross as the Hebrew writer said, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (See Hebrews 12:2), and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be with us regardless of how many deceitful words are spoken against us.

Next time David says, “cast your burden upon the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
