Why Do You Boast in Mischief? - Psalms 52:1

Psalms chapter fifty two begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.]]” which breaks down, “to the chief musician” or “to the preeminent, overseeing superintendent or chief choir director”, “Maschil” which means “a song or poem of contemplation” “a Psalm” or “a poem or melody set to notes” “of David” which means “belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel”, “when Doeg the Edomite” or “at the time Doeg whose name means fearing and was an Edomite or from the land of Edom whose name means red, chief of Saul's herdsmen, who slew all the priests” “came and told Saul” which means “arose, approached and spoke to Saul whose name means desired and was a Benjamite, the son of Kish and the first king of Israel”, “and said unto him” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to Saul”, “David is come” which means “David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel has been brought to and entered” “to the house of Ahimelech” or “to the dwelling place, habitation and abode belonging to Ahimelech whose name means my brother is king or brother of Melek and was a priest”, (See 1 Samuel 22:7-19) and in chapter fifty-two and verse one of Psalms David asked, “Why boast you yourself in mischief, O mighty man?”, where we read,

Why boast you yourself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endures continually.

The verse begins, Why boast you yourself in mischief, O mighty man?” David began with the words, “why boast you yourself in mischief” or “for what reason and cause do you, Doeg, brag, shine and count your own self commended and worthy of praise in bad, unpleasantness, evil, displeasure and wickedness”, “O mighty man” which means “O strong, upright, valiant, chief and strong male human being”? David questioned the reason “Doeg” celebrated himself as being a strong and valiant man while committing wickedness and evil.

The verse goes on to say,the goodness of God endures continually.” David continued with the words, “the goodness of God” or “the kindness, faithfulness and favor belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “endures continually” which means “lasts always and perpetually”. David said the favor, kindness and faithfulness of the Divine judge Jehovah God lasts perpetually.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David challenged “Doeg” for bragging upon himself in his wickedness and evil as though he were someone strong and powerful. “Doeg” boasted about himself in his “mischief” while forgetting that God's kindness and faithfulness continues perpetually. No one is able to divert God's favor to His people. Although “Doeg” attempted to subvert and depose David, God was on David's side. God desires to have an intimate personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and pour out His kindness, faithfulness and favor on us for all eternity.

Next time David says, “your tongue devises mischiefs”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
