Speaking Against Your Brother - Psalms 50:20

In Psalms chapter fifty Asaph said, “unto the wicked God says, What have you to do to declare my statutes, or that you should take my covenant in your mouth? Seeing you hate instruction, and cast my words behind you. When you saw a thief, then you consented with him, and have been partaker with adulterers. You give your mouth to evil, and your tongue frames deceit”, and in chapter fifty and verse twenty of Psalms Asaph shared how Jehovah God told the wicked, “you sit and speak against your brother” where we read,

You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

The verse begins, You sit and speak against your brother;” Asaph began with the words, “you sit” or “you, wicked people, are seated, fixed and established” “and speak against” which means “and utter, declare and proclaim in opposition toward” “your brother” or “your, the wicked person's, relative, kinship and male sibling of the same parents”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God said the “wicked” are fixed in their positions and utter opposition to their own “brothers” or kindred.

The verse continues, you slander your own mother's son.” Asaph added the words, “you slander” or “you, wicked people, put, set, bestowed and ascribed stumbling, blocking, blemish and fault toward” “your own mother's son” which means “your, the wicked people's, male offspring and progeny of their immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God told the “wicked” they ascribed fault to the male offspring of their mother.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see through Asaph how Jehovah God identified the way “wicked people” defamed their own “brothers” with their speech. Rather than build them up, the “wicked” used their tongues and mouths to denigrate them. This is not God's design. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and this is why He sent Jesus to the world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind. Sin separated everyone from God who is holy, and unless that sin is removed, no one would be able to approach Him. When we believe in Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us by His Holy Spirit to use our speech to exhort and build up others. God's invitation is to everyone, and we are wise to use our “mouths and tongues” to surrender to Him.

Next time Asaph shares how Jehovah God tells the wicked, these things have you done, and I kept silence, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
