Blessing His Soul While Living - Psalms 49:18

In Psalms chapter forty nine David said, “Be not you afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him”, and in chapter forty nine and verse eighteen of Psalms David said, “though while he lived he blessed his soul” where we read,

Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when you do well to yourself.

The verse begins, Though while he lived he blessed his soul:” David began with the words, “though while he lived” or “because, certainly and surely during the time he, the person who was made rich and their house increased, was alive, breathing and given to appetite” “he blessed his soul” which means “he, the person who was made rich and their house increased, adored, praised, saluted and abundantly congratulated their own inner man, mind, desire and seat of appetites, emotions and passions”. David referred to the way the person who was made rich and had honor upon earth adored, praised and celebrated themselves while they were living.

The verse continues, and men will praise you, when you do well to yourself.” David added the words, “and men will praise you” or “and human beings both male and female shall honor, laud, revere and worship you, anyone who does the following”, “when you do well to yourself” which means “at the time and moment you, anyone reading and listening to David's words, are pleasing, being glad, joyful and doing right to their own selves.” David shared how others will give honor and worship to a person at the time they are joyful, glad and giving reverence to themselves.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David acknowledged the person who honors and adores themselves while they are living, and he knew other people would revere them as well. There are many on the earth who prosper and live in honor, however, they have no personal relationship with Jehovah God. Life continues beyond death, and either a person will spend it with God or in total darkness. (See Matthew 8:12, 22:13 and 25:30) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us eternal life and accompany us beyond our death, and there is no greater blessing, honor or praise that people may receive.

Next time David says,he shall go to the generation of his fathers, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
