The Land Shall Mourn - Zechariah 12:12

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon”, and in chapter twelve and verse twelve of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “the land shall mourn” where we read,

And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart,

and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;

The verse reads, “And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, ... Zechariahbegan with the words, “and the land shall mourn” or “and the country, territory, district and region will wail, grieve and lament”, “every family apart” which means “each, the whole, all and everyone of the clans, tribes and people by themselves”; “the family of the house of David apart” or “the clan, tribe and people belonging to the dwelling place, abode and habitation belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the son of Jesse and the second king of Israel, by themselves”. Zechariah shared how the country, territory and region would wail and lament by themselves with each “family” separated and the dwelling place of “David” lamenting separately as well.

The verse goes on to say, “... and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;Zechariah continued with the words, “and their wives apart” or “and their, the people of the families and house of David's, female spouses by themselves”; “the family” which means “the clan, tribe and people” “of the house of Nathan apart” or “belonging to the dwelling place, abode and habitation belonging to Nathan whose name means giver and was head of a family of Israel who shall mourn when they look on Him whom they pierced”, “and their wives apart” which means “and their, the house of Nathan's, female spouses by themselves”. Zechariah shared how the families belonging to “David and Nathan” would mourn with their “female spouses” separated from them.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how the effect of the people of Israel knowing that the one who was “pierced” is actually the Messiah and Son of God Jesus Christ will cause the people of “Jerusalem”, the dwelling place of “David”, the female spouses of “Nathan” and every “family” and their “wives” to grieve. The people of Israel will know that Jesus Christ is Lord, and because they have refused to believe this for so long, all those who recognize Jesus as the Messiah will weep bitterly even as they did at the death of Hadad Rimmon or King Josiah in Megiddon. (See 2 Kings 23:29; 2 Chronicles 35:20-25) God loves the people of Israel, and He loves us. He desires to have a personal relationship with all people through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross and pierced for our sins. When we discern who He is and believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and not only cause us to “mourn” like these people in Israel, but also to rejoice over Him saving our souls.

Great Mourning in Jerusalem - Zechariah 12:11

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn”, and in chapter twelve and verse eleven of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “in that day there shall be a great mourning” where we read,

In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem,

as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

The verse reads, “In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, ... Zechariah began with the words, “In that day” or “within that time period and season” “shall there be a great mourning” which means “will there exist an important, powerful, magnificent wailing, grieving and lamenting in grief” “in Jerusalem” or “within Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said within that season there would exist a powerful grieving within the ity of “Jerusalem”.

The verse continues, “... as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. Zechariah continued the words, “as the mourning” or “similar and in likeness to the wailing, grieving and lamenting” “of Hadadrimmon” which means “belonging to Hadadrimmon whose name means Hadad of the pomegranates and a place in the valley of Megiddo where a national lamentation was held for the death of King Josiah; named after two Syrian gods” “in the valley of Megiddon”or “within the plain and wide level area between the mountains belonging to Megiddon whose name means place of crowds and was the ancient city of Canaan assigned to Manasseh and located on the southern rim of the plain of Esdraelon 6 miles (10 km) from Mount Carmel and 11 miles (18 km) from Nazareth”. Zechariah shared how the grieving within the city of “Jerusalem” would be similar to the grief experienced Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates and King Josiah was killed at Megiddo. (See 2 Kings 23:29)

When we consider Zechariah's words in this verse, we learn how the people of Jerusalem would grieve and sorrow similar to weeping and sorrow expressed at the death of “Hadad Rimmon or King Josiah in the plain of Megiddo”. God allowed the crucifixion of Jesus and the sorrow and weeping experienced there because He wanted everyone to be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and to receive His Holy Spirit. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we will gain an understanding about the great sorrow experienced by the people of “Jerusalem” over the death of Jesus Christ because they will recognize that He is the Messiah, Savior and Lord of the world.

God Pouring Upon the House of David - Zechariah 12:10

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said of Jehovah God, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem”, and in chapter twelve and verse ten of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “I will pour upon the house of David” where we read,

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

The verse reads, “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: Zechariah began with the words, “and I will pour upon the house of David” or “and I, Jehovah God, shall spill forth on the dwelling place, abode and habitation belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the youngest son of Jesse and the second king of Israel”, “and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem” which means “and on the dwellers, abiders and ones who remain belonging to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”, “the spirit of grace” or “the mind, vigor and vivacity pertaining to favor, charm, elegance and acceptance” “and of supplication” which means “and pertaining to earnest prayer and entreaty”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said He would spill forth the mind of favor, acceptance and entreaty upon the dwelling place belonging to David and the people who abide in “Jerusalem”.

The verse continues, “and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, ... Zechariah added the words, “and they shall look upon me” or “and they, the dwelling place of David and the ones who live in Jerusalem, will observe me, Jehovah God's Messiah” “whom they have pierced” which means “who they, the dwelling place of David and the ones who live in Jerusalem, have wounded and thrust through”, “and they shall mourn for him” or “and they, the dwelling place of David and the ones who live in Jerusalem, will wail, lament and grieve on behalf of him, Jehovah God's Messiah”, “as one mourns” which means “similar and in likeness to a person who wails, grieves and laments” “for his only son” or “on behalf of his, the person's, unique, solitary and one male offspring”.Zechariah shared how the people who dwell in the house of David and in Jerusalem would observe the person whom they wounded and thrust through and would grieve on behalf of “him” like a person grieves over their sole male offspring.

Finally the verse says, “... and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and shall be in bitterness for him” which means “and will exist with irritability, choler and petulance”, “as one that is in bitterness” or “similar and in likeness to a person who exists within irritability, choler and petulance” “for his firstborn” which means “on behalf of his, the person's, firstling, eldest and first child”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how the dwelling place of David and the ones who live in Jerusalem will also exist with irritability and choler similar to the way a person exist with irritability for their “firstborn” child.

When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Zechariah another prophesy concerning the Messiah Jesus. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, the people of Israel in the city of Jerusalem called for Him to be crucified. (See John 1:29; 19:34-37) A Roman soldier pierce His side with a spear and fulfilled this very scripture. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (See John 3:16) When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will for give our sins, grant us everlasting life and cause us to understand through His Holy Spirit the significance of the “spirit of grace and supplications” as well as the significance of the people “mourning” and being in “bitterness” over His piercing.

God Destroying the Nations Against Jerusalem - Zechariah 12:9

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them, and in chapter twelve and verse nine of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem” where we read,

And it shall come to pass in that day,

that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

The verse reads, “And it shall come to pass in that day, ... Zechariah began with the words, “and it shall come to pass” or “and the following will happen and occur” “in that day” which means “within that time period or season”. Zechariah shared how the following was to occur within a certain season.

The verse goes on to say, “... that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. Zechariah continued with the words, “that I will seek to destroy” or “that I, Jehovah God, shall exact, require and desire to exterminate, overthrow and annihilate” “all the nations” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the heathen, non-Hebrew and Gentile foreign people groups” “that come against Jerusalem” or “who rise in opposition to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said He would desire to exterminate and overthrow every one of the non-Hebrew foreign people groups who rise up in opposition to “Jerusalem”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God would defend “Jerusalem”against every people group who stands as enemies and foes to them. God loves the people of Israel, and any “nation” that comes against them, comes against Him. God wants to have a personal relationship with everyone of us through His Son Jesus who came through the lineage of Israel and died on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion for Israel and His defense of them against all foes.

Defending Jerusalem - Zechariah 12:8

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah, and in chapter twelve and verse eight of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem” where we read,

In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them.

The verse reads, “In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; Zechariah began with the words, “in that day” or “within that time period or season” “shall the LORD” which means “will Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem” or “hedge, cover and protect the dwellers, abiders and people who remain within Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God would cover and protect the people who dwell in “Jerusalem”.

The verse continues, “and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; Zechariah added the words, “and he that is feeble among them” or “and the person whether male or female who stumble, stagger and totter in the midst and middle of them, the people who dwell in Jerusalem” “at that day” which means “in that time period or season” “shall be as David” or “will exist similar and in likeness to David whose name means blessed and was the youngest son of Jesse and the second king of Israel”. Zechariah shared how the person who stumbles and staggers within the midst of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be as mighty as “David”.

Finally the verse says, “and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them.” Zechariah concluded this verse by saying, “and the house of David” which means “and the dwelling place, habitation and abode belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the youngest son of Jesse and the second king of Israel” “shall be as God” or “will exist similar and in likeness to the Supreme Deity”, “as the angel of the LORD” which means “similar and in likeness to the envoy or messenger belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “before them” or “in front, in advance and prior to them, the people of Jerusalem”. Zechariah ended this verse by saying the dwelling place of “David” would exist similar to the Supreme Deity, and Jehovah God's messenger goes in advance of them.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God would defend and protect the people who live within “Jerusalem”, and the weakest people in the midst of them would exist similar to “David”. The people within the dwelling place of “David” would exist similar to the Supreme Deity with Jehovah God's messenger leading them. God loves the people of Israel, and when He defends and protects them, no one can defeat them. God loves us in the same manner, and He proved His love when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us an understanding of God's defense of Israel and those who dwell with them.

Saving the Tents of Judah - Zechariah 12:7

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “in that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem, and in chapter twelve and verse seven of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “the LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first” where we read,

The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.

The verse reads, The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, ... Zechariah began with the words, “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “also shall save the tents of Judah” which means “even so and indeed will rescue, liberate and deliver the homes, habitations and dwellings belonging to Judah whose name means praised and is the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon” “first” or “in the primary, chief and foremost position”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God would liberate in the foremost position the dwelling placed of the people of “Judah”.

The verse continues, “... that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. Zechariah added the words, “that the glory of the house of David” or “so the belonging to beauty, splendor and honor pertaining to the dwelling place, location and abode belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the youngest son of Jesse and the second king of Israel” “and the glory” which means “and the beauty, splendor and honor” “of the inhabitants of Jerusalem” or “belonging to the dwellers, abiders and ones who remain within Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split” “do not magnify themselves” which means “in no way or manner promote, make powerful or excellent their own selves” “against Judah” or “in opposition to Judah whose name means praise and the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”. Zechariah shared how the honor and splendor of they dwelling place belonging to “David”and the honor and splendor belonging to the dwellers within “Jerusalem” would in no way promote their own selves in opposition to “Judah”.

When we consider Zechariah's words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God would liberate the dwelling places of the nation of “Judah” in the chief position, and the result would be that the splendor and honor of the dwelling place of “David” and the dwellers within “Jerusalem” would in no way promote their own selves over “Judah”. God loves “Judah, the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem”, and because He wanted no one to promote themselves over “Judah”, He saved them foremost. God loves us, and He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to understand that He values all people and wants everyone to be in a personal relationship with Him.

Next time Zechariah says, “the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
