In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, says the LORD, which stretches forth the heavens, and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him”, and in chapter twelve and verse two of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the LORD said, “I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about” where we read,
Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about,
when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
The verse reads, “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, ...” Zechariah began with the words, “behold, I will make Jerusalem” or “lo, look and consider, I, Jehovah God, shall cause Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split” “a cup of trembling” which means “a basin, goblet or bowl with reeling, drunkenness or intoxication” “unto all the people round about” or “toward each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings both male and female in the circuit and from every side”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God called upon people to consider that He will cause “Jerusalem” to be like a reeling intoxicated person to human beings everywhere.
The verse goes on to say, “... when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.” Zechariah continued with the words, “when they shall be” or “at the time and moment they, the other people, will exist” “in the siege” which means “within the entrenchment, enclosure, rampart and distress” “both against Judah” or “even so, also and indeed in opposition to Judah whose name means praised and the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon” “and against Jerusalem” which means “and in opposition to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared at the time the nations of the world besiege “Judah and Jerusalem”, God will make “Judah and Jerusalem” to be similar to an intoxicating drink that makes them stagger.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God will involve Himself in the lives of the people of Israel once again as He causes everyone who rises in opposition to “Judah and Jerusalem” to stagger because of their reeling. God loves Israel, and anyone who opposes them, opposes Him. He chose the nation of Israel to be the nation through whom His Son Jesus would come to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an awe and reverence for what He does for Israel and what He does against all who oppose them.
Next time Zechariah shared how Jehovah God says, “I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
