In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, ...”, and in chapter eight and verse two of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the LORD said, “I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy”where we read,
Thus says the LORD of hosts;
I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury.
The verse reads, “Thus says the LORD of hosts;” Zechariah began with the words, “thus says” or “therefore, then and on this account utters, declares and proclaims” “the LORD of hosts” which means “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors”. Zechariah said the following words were declared by Jehovah God who rules over angel armies.
The verse continues, “I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury.” Zechariah added the words, “I was jealous for Zion” or “I, Jehovah God, existed as envious for and on behalf of Zion whose name means parched place and is another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books” “with great jealousy” which means “accompanied by a massive, intense and exceedingly more envy”, “and I was jealous for her” or “and I, Jehovah God, existed as envious on behalf of her, Zion” “with great fury” which means “accompanied by a massive, intense and exceedingly more heated rage, hot displeasure, indignation, wrath and fervor”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God declared that he was exceedingly envious for “Zion”, and His “jealousy” for them was abundantly intense.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah about another time that Jehovah God expresses His intense “jealousy” on behalf of “Zion” or Jerusalem. (See Zechariah 1:14-16) God knows what is best for Jerusalem and the people of Israel, and His passion is “for” them and not “of” them. God is aware of what we need, and when we realize He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, we may yield our lives to Him and be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given an understanding about His love and passion for us to have His direction for our lives. (See John 16:13)
Next time Zechariah shares how the LORD says, “I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
