In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it”, and in chapter twelve and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the LORD said, “I will smite every horse with astonishment” where we read,
In that day, says the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open my eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
The verse reads, “In that day, says the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness:”Zechariah began with the words, “in that day” or “within that time period and season”, “says the LORD” which means “utters, declares and proclaims Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “I will smite every horse” or “I, Jehovah God, shall hit, beat, slay and kill each, the whole, all and everyone of the swifts or chariot horses” “with astonishment” which means “accompanied by bewilderment, stupefaction and consternation”, “and his rider” or “and his, the horse's, mounter” “with madness” which means “accompanied by furious craziness”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said within that season He would beat each chariot horse with bewilderment and consternation, and the ones who mount them with furious craziness.
The verse continues, “and I will open my eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.” Zechariah added the words, “and I will open my eyes” or “and I, Jehovah God, shall make ajar my, Jehovah God's, observance and and watching” “upon the house of Judah” which means “on the dwelling place, abode and habitation belonging to Judah whose name means praised and was the kingdom comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the southern part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”, “and will smite every horse” or “and shall hit, slay and beat each, every, the whole and all the carriage horses ” “of the people” which means “belonging to the human beings both male and female” “with blindness” or “accompanied by inability to see”.Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said He would watch over the dwelling place of the people of “Judah”, and He would cause all the chariot horses belonging to the human beings with an inability to see.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God involves Himself in the war horses belonging to the enemies of Israel. The idea is that Jehovah God is Israel's defense, and He is easily able to cause the chariot horses and their riders to become crazy. He knows we are in a battle as well, and because our battle is spiritual and involves our sin, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See Ephesians 6:12) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit about His love for the people of Israel and for us.
Next time Zechariah shares what Jehovah God says about, “the governors of Judah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
