In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and made you as the sword of a mighty man. And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south”, and in chapter nine and verse fifteen of Zechariah, Zechariah said,“the LORD of hosts shall defend them” where we read,
The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.
The verse reads, “The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones;” Zechariahbegan with the words, “the LORD of hosts” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors” “shall defend them” which means “will cover, surround and protect them, the people of Israel”; “and they shall devour” or “and they, the people of Israel, will consume, burn up and slay”, “and subdue” which means “and keep under, bring into bondage and tread down” “with sling and stones” or “by the use of a slingshot and marble, common rocks and carbuncles”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God who rules over angel armies would be the defense and protection of the people of Israel, and Israel would consume and tread down their enemies by the use of slingshots and rocks.
The verse goes on to say, “and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine;” Zechariah continued with the words, “and they shall drink” or “and the people of Israel will imbibe and take in drink”, “and make a noise” which means “and murmur, growl, cry aloud and rage” “as through wine” or “similar and in likeness to people who are intoxicated or drunken from drinking fermented wine”. Zechariah shared how the people of Israel would imbibe and cry aloud with a loud sound similar to the way an intoxicated person yells.
Finally the verse says, “and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and they shall be filled” which means “and they, the people of Israel, will be satisfied, complete and fully furnished” “like bowls” or “similar and in likeness to basins or vessels”, “and as the corners” which means “and similar and in likeness to the projected angles of prominence” “of the altar” or “belonging to the place of slaughter upon which sacrifices are made”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how Jehovah God said the people of Israel would also be completed similar to the basins or vessels and the prominent projected angles belonging to the sacrificial slaughtering or worship place.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God who rules over the angel armies would not only come to the defense of the people of Israel, but also that they were to carry out His defense through the means of slingshots and large stones. The people of Israel would imbibe, cry aloud similar to an intoxicated person and be completed similar to full vessels and prominent angles on the sacrificial place. God was to rule over the people of Israel, and they were to be fully committed to Him and His provision. God desires the same for us, and because He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, we may come to Him in humility, ask forgiveness for our sins and align ourselves with His plan of provision and protection over our lives. He desires to be in a personal relationship with us, and all we must do is yield to Him.
Next time Zechariah says, “the LORD shall save them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
