Old People in the Streets - Zechariah 8:4

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah wrote, “Thus says the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain, and in chapter eight and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the LORD said, “there shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem” where we read,

Thus says the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.

The verse reads, Thus says the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, ... Zechariah began with the words, “thus says the LORD of hosts” or “therefore, then and on this account utters, declares and proclaims Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors”; “there shall yet old men” which means “aged male human beings will even so, still and indeed” “and old women” or “and aged female human beings will” “dwell in the streets” which means “live, abide and inhabit the broad and open places, plazas and avenues” “of Jerusalem” or “belonging to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God who rules the angel armies declared that aged male and female human beings would live within the broad and open avenues belonging to “Jerusalem”.

The verse continues, “... and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. Zechariah added the words, “and every man” or “and each, the whole and all male human beings” “with his staff in his hand” which means “accompanied by his, the man's, walking-stick or canes within his physical hand” “for very age” or “because of their advanced age”. Zechariah shared how each male human being would have their walking-stick or cane within their physical hand because of their advanced age.

When we think through Zechariah's words in this verse, we discover how Jehovah God not only purposed to live within “Jerusalem”, but also that older people would dwell within the “streets” therein. The aged men would hold their walking-sticks within their hands because of their elder years, but they would have no fear to dwell within the city. The idea is that with God living in Jerusalem, these elderly people would be safe. God wants to be the provision and protection of every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to find our security and safety within His presence. (See Psalm 16:11)

Next time Zechariah shares how the LORD says, “the streets of the city shall be full of girls and boys”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
