In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it asunder, that I might break my covenant which I had made with all the people”, and in chapter eleven and verse eleven of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “it was broken in that day” where we read,
And it was broken in that day:
and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD.
The verse reads, “And it was broken in that day:” Zechariah began with the words, “and it was broken” or “and it, God's covenant named Beauty, was made ineffectual, frustrated, cracked and scattered with the people of Israel” “in that day” which means “within that time period and season” that the people of Israel forsook the LORD and His ways. Zechariah said Jehovah God's “covenant” was made ineffectual in the season that Israel withdrew from Jehovah God and His ways.
The verse continues, “and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD.”Zechariah added the words, “and so the poor” or “and therefore, then and wherefore the afflicted, humble, needed, wretched and impoverished” “of the flock” which means “belonging to the multitude of the people of Israel” “that waited upon me” or “who kept watch, observed and gave heed to me, Zechariah” “knew that it was the word” which means “learned, perceived, discriminated and discerned that was the speech, utterance, saying and declaration” “of the LORD”or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Zechariah shared how the humble and needy people who observed him understood that He was declaring Jehovah God's utterances and proclamations.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God's alliance was “broken” with the people of Israel in the time period when they abandoned their relationship with Him. The humble and needy people of Israel were aware that he was speaking Jehovah God's words, and even though God wanted a “covenant” relationship with them, they forsook Him. God loves us, and He wants a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to that truth so our relationship with Him is never broken or destroyed. (See John 16:13; Acts 1:8)
Next time Zechariah shares how Jehovah God says, “if you think good, give me my price”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
