The LORD Casting Out and Smiting - Zechariah 9:4

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD. And Hamath also shall border thereby; Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise. And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets”, and in chapter nine and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how “the LORD will cast her out, and he will smite her power” where we read,

Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea;

and she shall be devoured with fire.

The verse reads, Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; Zechariah began with the words, “Behold, the Lord will cast her out” or “lo, look and consider, the title spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence shall strip and take away the possessions of her, Tyrus or Tyre”, “and he will smite her power” which means “and he, Jehovah God, shall beat, slay and kill her, Tyrus' or Tyre's, strength, might, wealth, fortifications and ability” “in the sea” or “within the large body of water or sea where Tyrus abides”. Zechariah shared how God would strip away the possessions of “Tyrus” and slay her strength within the large body of water or “sea” in which “Tyrus”dwells.

The verse continues, “and she shall be devoured with fire. Zechariah added the words, “and she shall be devoured” or “and she, Tyrus, will eaten up, burned up and consumed” “with fire” which means “by the use of fiery fire”. Zechariah shared how “Tyrus” was destined to be consumed by fiery fire.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God was to contend with the people of “Tyrus”, and He did. “Tyrus or Tyre” thought themselves to be secure because they built their city on an island which was separate from the land, and they had accumulated “silver and gold” to sustain themselves. God used the nation of Greece through Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. to overtake them, and by way of a causeway which was built from the fragments of their flattened city, “Tyrus” was overcome and destroyed. God's idea is to save people from their sins and to have a personal relationship with them. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding that He is more powerful than any person or nation who believes they are secure within themselves in opposition to Him.

Next time Zechariah says, “Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
