As Fire Burns the Wood - Psalms 83:14

In Psalms chapter eighty three Asaph spoke of the enemies of Israel and said, “O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind”, and in chapter eighty three and verse fourteen of Psalms Asaph beckoned Jehovah God to deal with the foes of Israel, “As the fire burns a wood”, where we read,

As the fire burns a wood, and as the flame sets the mountains on fire;

The verse begins, As the fire burns a wood, ... Asaph began with the words, “as the fire” or “in likeness and similar to the fiery fire that”, “burns a wood” which means “consumes and devours a wooded height, thicket or forest”. Asaph referred to the consumption of “fire” upon a wooded forest as an example of the way He wanted Jehovah God to devour His enemies.

The verse continues,... and as the flame sets the mountains on fire; Asaph added the words, “and as the flame” or “and like unto the tip of a weapon, point or spearhead” “sets the mountains on fire” which means “kindles, blazes and scorches the range of hills or hill country”. Asaph referred to way “fire” scorches a range of mountains as it burns.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Asaph used the way “fire” burns forests and scorches the range of hills once it begins to burn as examples of how Jehovah God should judge His enemies. In other words, devour them like “fire”. God will indeed judge people who have refused and rejected His offer of salvation through His Son Jesus even as Jesus said, Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels”. (See Matthew 25:41) God wants people to realize that He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for their sins, and if they will believe and trust in Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. This invitation is to everyone, but should we refuse, we remain as enemies unto God and woe be to the “fire” that shall consume those who reject Him.

Next time Asaph beckons Jehovah God to, “persecute them with your tempest”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
