In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you”, and in chapter four and verse ten of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God asked, “who has despised the days of small things?” where we read,
For who has despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
The verse reads, “For who has despised the day of small things?” Zechariah began with the words, “for who has despised” or “because, since and on account that what person has held in contempt, disrespected, contemned and made insignificant” “the day of small things” which means “the time period and season pertaining to diminutive, tiny and little beginnings”? Zechariah shared how Jehovah God questioned what person disrespected and held in contempt the time for little beginnings.
The verse goes on to say, “for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven;”Zechariah continued with the words, “for they shall rejoice” or “because, since and on account that they, the people of Israel, will be gleesome, exult and joyful”, “and see the plummet” which means “and perceive, discern, discriminate and observe the plume line” “in the hand of Zerubbabel” or “within the physical hand belonging to Zerubbabel whose name means sown in Babylon and was the grandson of king Jehoiachin and leader of the first group of returning exiles from Babylon” “with those seven” which means “alongside and accompanying those seven lamps” “has sent me to you” or “has dispatched and assigned me, the angel, to you, the people of Israel”. Zechariah shared how the people of Israel would be joyful and have glee because they shall observe the plumb line within the physical hand of “Zerubbabel” accompanied by the “seven lamps” of God.
Finally the verse says, “they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “they are the eyes” or “they, the seven lamps, exist as the spiritual eyes for vision”“of the LORD” which means “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “which run to and fro” or “who eagerly travel or go back and forth” “through the whole earth” which means “across and all over the entire and total country, territory, region, district and world”. Zechariah ended this verse with a description of how the seven lamps represented the “spiritual eyes” of Jehovah God which travel back and forth throughout the world.
When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Zechariah how Jehovah God questioned what person has disrespected and condemned the season for little beginnings, and He spoke of confirming His presence among the people of Israel by the fact that “Zerubbabel” would hold the “plumb line” for rebuilding His house or temple within His physical hand. “Zerubbabel” would be accompanied by the “seven spirits” of Jehovah God (See Revelation 1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6) which roam throughout the world which meant God would be with him as he oversaw the rebuilding of His house. The people of Israel left off building the temple after returning from being captives in Babylon for seventy years, and“Zerubbabel” was to be the leader to rebuild it again. The people of Israel needed to put God first in their lives, and when they observed their leader restarting the building with a plumb line, they would follow him. (See Matthew 6:33) God wants to be in a personal relationship with all of us through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and begin with “small things” to use us in His Kingdom in ways for which we should never “despise”.
Next time Zechariah asks, “what are these two olive trees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
