Breaking the Bow - Psalms 76:3

In Psalms chapter seventy-six Asaph said, “In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion”, and in chapter seventy-six and verse three of Psalms Asaph said, There breaks he the arrows of the bowwhere we read,

There breaks he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

The verse begins, There breaks he the arrows of the bow, ... Asaph began with the words, “there breaks he” or “within Salem and Zion he, Jehovah God, wrecks, crushes, quenches and ruptures” “the arrows of the bow” which means “the flying arrows used for hunting and battle belonging to the bow used for hunting and battle”. Asaph said Jehovah God crushes the arrows within the bows used by the enemies of Judah and Salem.

The verse continues,... the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. Asaph added the words, “the shield” or “the buckler or small shield used for protection”, “and the sword” which means “and the knife, axe, dagger or other sharp implement”, “and the battle” or “and the war or warfare”. “Selah” which means “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. Asaph said Jehovah God also destroys the buckler, sharp instruments and the warfare itself that belongs to Salem and Judah's enemies.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph how Jehovah God destroys the warfare and instruments used for war of His enemies. God was Israel's protector and defender, and regardless of who came against them, they were actually fighting with God. We are also fighting a battle against spiritual enemies who desire to destroy our souls. Paul the apostle wrote, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (See Ephesians 6:12), and we can do no better than to rely upon Jehovah God to “crush” the weapons of our enemies even as He did when He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and be aligned with the God of the Universe who is able to defeat any foe who rises up against us.

Next time Asaph says, “you are more glorious and excellent than the mountains, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
