In Psalms chapter forty eight David said, “the kings were assembled, they passed by together. They saw it, and so they marveled; they were troubled, and hasted away”, and in chapter forty eight and verse six of Psalms David said, “fear took hold upon them there” where we read,
Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
The verse begins, “Fear took hold upon them there, ...” David began with the words, “fear took hold upon them” or “trembling, shuddering, fright and anxiety grasped, seized and took possession of them, the kings who were assembled” “there” which means “in the place to where the kings fled”. David said the “royal rulers” were made afraid in the location to where they fled.
The verse continues, “... and pain, as of a woman in travail.” David added the words, “and pain” or “agony, sorrow, writhing and anguish”, “as of a woman” which means “in likeness unto a female human being who is” “in travail” or “having distress as in birthing pains”. David said the kings were so afraid that it caused them to be in pain like a woman who is giving birth.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see through David the effect viewing the city of Jerusalem had upon the “royal rulers”. Not only did they run away, but they were in such terror and fear that they experienced “pain” like that of a woman birthing a child. This is not God's original intention for mankind, but because of sin people were in a condemned condition. (See John 3:17) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield ourselves to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and insure that we are never terrorized by what He does in Jerusalem.
Next time David says, “you break the ships of Tarshish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
