A Neck Like the Tower of David - Song of Songs 4:4

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said to the bride, “Your lips are like a thread of scarlet, and your speech is comely: your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within your locks”, and in chapter four and verse four of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said the bride's, neck is like the tower of David built for an armory where we read,

Your neck is like the tower of David builded for an armory,

whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.

The verse begins, Your neck is like the tower of David builded for an armory, ... Solomon began with the words, “your neck” or “your, the bride's, neck of her body” “is like the tower” which means “exists similar and in likeness to the tall rostrum, pillar and structure” “of David” or “belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the youngest son of Jesse and the second king of Israel” “builded for an armory” which means “erected, established and set up on behalf of a tall repository for weapons”. Solomon shared how the groom told the bride her “neck” was similar to the tall structure built by David which was used for a repository for weapons which spoke to the noble and strong character the groom observed in the bride.

The verse goes on to say, ... whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men. Solomon continued with the words, “whereon there hang” or “on which, there were suspended” “a thousand bucklers” which means “one thousand shields for defense”, “all shields” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the defensive and protective armors” “of mighty men” which means “belonging to strong, valiant and brave male human beings”. Solomon shared how the groom added that one thousand protective “shields” and defensive armors belonging to powerful and mighty “men” were suspended upon David's “armory tower”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the groom continued to speak favorably of the characteristics of the bride. He compared her “neck” to the “tower of David” which spoke of her nobility and strength as she avoided hanging her head low in a depressed manner. He noted how the “armory” was adorned with one thousand defensive weapons or “shields” belonging to powerful “men” which were displayed upon the tower walls as a symbol of victory and preparedness for the warriors who would employ them. The groom loved the bride both for her physical beauty and for her lovely character. God made us, and He loves us. He wants to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cause our character to be more and more like His through the guidance of His Holy Spirit. (See Psalm 17:15)

Next time Solomon shares how the groom tells what part of the bride is, like two young roes so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
